Styling food and drinks with Easter vibes

I love a celebration as it gives me a reason to get more playful and creative with food and drink styling. I’d usually avoid having cute props in a shot but Easter gives me the perfect excuse to exercise my more childish side. But you’ve still got to be selective when faced with shelves of brightly coloured bunnies and chicks as they can look too garish or downright naff.

I was really pleased to find 3 plain white ceramic bunnies in the right proportions for the Easter bread shot that I styled for a food photography workshop. I love working with backlight and at a high angle for a lower dish like this. The light reveals the textures and it’s so bright and airy, perfect to suggest the advent of Spring and a very welcome change in the seasons. The mini egg cheesecake feels particularly sunny and warm.

The Easter Bundt Cake and Hot Cross Buns were both shot from the side to allow more height and depth to the images. Adding delicate wax flowers and edible flowers really adds to the Spring feel.

It was great to have fun with these cocktails as well, where chocolate rabbits, a certain brand of creme egg and pastel coloured mini eggs add a fun element to otherwise grown up drinks. I can’t tell you how much we enjoyed licking the chocolate off the edge of the glasses! And although a little challenging to make they turned out much better than I expected. These shots were for Manchester based Salford Rum.
